In our article, "New Improvements for Surface Oxide Testing of Copper Rod," we showed that rod with subsurface oxides has a dramatically different relationship to current density than does products which do not have subsurface oxides, like foil and most wire.  Shaved rod should exhibit this same relationship as foil since properly shaved rod should not contain subsurface oxides.  We wanted to verify that this was true.

Shaved rod was obtained that had been drawn and shaved from 8 mm diameter down to 6.78 mm diameter.  The shaved rod was not tested until about a week and half after it was obtained, so there would have been oxidation in the interim.  Each sample was cleaned with acetone prior to testing.

The Figure below shows the test results for as-received shaved rod.  

 

Notice that the data from shaved rod is very similar to the data for foil, which is shown below.  (The Figure uses the same data as that of Figure 3 in the article, but without the efficiency monitor adjustments.)

So these two figures do verify that shaved rod has a relationship with current density similar to foil, since this shaved rod does not have subsurface oxides.
