Some rod plant capture the fines (particles) shed from the rod during twist testing and use this as rough measure rod quality.  Indeed this is also a rough measure of the amount of subsurface oxides in the rod they are friable and will tend to cause the liberation of particles.  Such a test is very rough and only can be used as an indicator.   However, here are some recommended steps.

bullet

Clean the rod prior to twist testing so that residual mill emulsion does not hold the fines to the rod.  The preferred cleaning method is ultrasonic (see the FPA).

bullet

Use an rapidly deployable capturing fixture that can readily guide captured fines into a weighing tray.  (Confident Instruments can provide a low-cost fixture designed for this  purpose, along with a full test procedure.  Contact )
